Penny for your thoughts? UK currency to have a literary twist in 2016

By Spring 2016, the British public should start to see new coins featuring images to represent Shakespeare and Beatrix Potter in their purses.

The new commemorative currency is intended to give a snapshot of the history of Britain in the past 1,000 years.

The histories, comedies and tragedies of Shakespeare will be depicted on £2 coins, 400 years after his death, whilst a 50p coin will honour Beatrix Potter’s 150th birthday.

Other commemorative coins in the series include the Battle of Hastings, the Great Fire of London, and the centenary of World War I.
